CASE 1
The Conversion of the OLYMPIC PRINCESS
In the beginning of 2001, EISA signed a contract which carried great challenges, both in technological requirements and in the timeframe for execution. The contract was the conversion of a modern Norwegian PSV - Platform Supply Vessel - built in 2000, into a platform for laying and repairing fiber optics cables. The ship belonged to Olympic Shipping, an Alesand, Norway based company and was under contract from DSND Consul for operations on the Atlantic.
The contractor developed the conversion process with specialized third parties. EISAs technical/commercial proposal was selected during the selection process. The job basically consisted in the construction of an additional tween deck of nearly 700 tons of steel, installation of the cable laying equipment, installation of electrical and hydraulic equipment, control cabins, an "A" frame for the operation of a ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle), equipment for underwater operations and testing of the whole setup. The planning included a period of five months before the arrival of the ship for the development of the project, acquisition of parts and equipment, and pre-fabrication of the structural blocks for the new deck. This proceeding allowed for the ship to be held for the least amount of time possible, which was commercially convenient for the ship owner.
After the arrival of the ship, the whole enterprise took the 45 days specified by the contract.
The conclusion of the project on the assigned date and the execution of such a difficult undertaking rigorously within the standards required is undoubtedly a great success for EISA in the demanding field of ship conversions.
